Are We Agents Asleep or What?
June 27th, 2007 categories: Buyer Info, Charlotte Area News, Real Estate News, Seller Info
Ok…I’ve got to vent a little here and give us agents all a little kick in the back-end if applicable. I’m reading my local paper Sunday morning. There is a huge article about 20–somethings who have experienced their “fill-in-the-blank”, One was a person who had just purchased and opened their first 401K and long-term investment portfolio. Another was purchasing their first new car. yet another was experiencing her first “real” job. Of course there was an article about a person who had purchased her first home. The article described their experience, and their thought process they when through to get to the end result. Overall, basically an interesting article.
The thing that completely irked me was involving the young woman who had purchased her first home. From the account in the paper, this woman did everything very well. She knew her budget, she knew the general area she wanted to live, and wanted an area she felt most likely would hold its value and hopefully appreciate nicely. Seemed pretty savvy for a first time home owner.
The article, though, in the second paragraph says she made a “big mistake” by not researching mortgages. Apparently when she went to close she didn’t get the low-interest loan she had been promised. The woman states in the article that “…as a first-time home-buyer, I thought it was his duty (the mortgage broker) to hold my hand. He obviously didn’t feel the same way…” Seems the real estate agent noticed the issue at closing, causing a delay of five hours. In the end she ended up with a payment much higher than expected.
Grrrrr….I wanted to scream “yes, he should be holding your hand through the process…!!” Why shouldn’t he..of course he was looking out for himself. Also why didn’t the real estate agent encourage her to speak with several mortgage providers??
Then later that day a friend comes up to me and asks if I can look up something in the MLS. I say sure… Seems he had elected to go with a long term friend to list his home (of course discounted commission). Okay, that’s a problem enough – but a different post someday. Anyway, he wanted to make sure his agent had gotten the MLS information completed and entered. He wasn’t completely trusting that his agent had done it. Again…grrrrr. What the heck was his agent doing? Why didn’t he already send him a copy of the listing? I didn’t mind looking it up (it was entered), but it’s scary to think that my friend has to check up on his agent…
Our market here in Charlotte, NC is pretty strong. Do we get lazy when things are good and forget good, old-fashioned service? Our market will turn down like many others. What happens to these folks then? I hope it is a weeding process…and I pray and work everyday that I’m not a dandelion, too…I also hope someone kicks me and reminds me if I fall asleep….

Brian - Couldn’t agree with you more. I am going through a situation now with the other side relaxing like the picture. What wasn’t done in 110 days I accomplished in 30 minutes. Goes to show, there’s good and bad in every industry.

It’s frustrating when one bad apple is used to represent all agents, especially when so many do go the extra mile to help their clients get the best deal. I only hope the young woman in question doesn’t hold that one broker’s negligence against the next one she deals with.
